"The number of U.S. children taking antidepressants has more than doubled since the early 1990s. Thats when the SSRI type of antidepressants (such as Celexa, Paxil, Prozac, and Zoloft) began to dominate the market. Yet only one SSRI, fluoxetine (Prozac), has been approved in the U.S. for treating pediatric depression. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration denied manufacturers' applications for approval to prescribe Celexa, Effexor, Paxil, or Zoloft for patients under 18 because studies showed they were not effective.More»
In the past year, new evidence has emerged suggesting a possible connection between starting antidepressant treatment and an increase in suicide risk."
